Albert Hofmann :: January 11, 1906 - April 29, 2008

Albert Hoffman from Hoffman.org
Albert Hofmann passed away at his home at 9 a.m. on Tuesday April 29, 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 102. He will be missed.

Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of Zürich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to work for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids.

Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 ug of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab.

In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his death at the age of 102.

r.i.p. mr. hoffman. you changed the world. in memoriam, here's a few words from the steely dan song that honored you..

"While the music played you worked by candlelight

Those san francisco nights

You were the best in town

Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl

You turned it on the world

Thats when you turned the world around

Did you feel like jesus?

Did you realize

That you were a champion in their eyes?"

there was an incredible special on the History channel (in HD) on the history of psychedelics and how they were found and rooted in ancient and shaman rituals found in cultures throughout the world. They made interesting correlations between the natural version of the drugs that often some of us take, and their consumer and manufactured counterpart. The thing that was so striking, that as the world was awakening to the knowledge of these chemicals and their effects, we would synthesize that knowledge and create it in the lab. One example of this, is how Richard Evans Schultes (the man that brought every other type of drug, from shrooms to DMT to the masses from the amazon), found the plant that creates natural LSD, at the EXACT same time that Hoffman synthesized it in the lab. It's crazy to think about how, from a philosophical perspective, that once the "knowledge" of the existence of said chemicals enters into the consciousness of one being, that it is available as a possibility for another being. love it.

R I P Dr Hofmann, you will forever be the portal from which Love sent us the healing sacrament that has helped many to open a connection to God in the heart, brotherly love, peace, wisdom, truth! May there be many, always and forever, to keep the syntheses happening but what big shoes for us to fill.

MUCH LOVE and best wishes on your trip.

Where would this country be without LSD? One of the prime reasons we had the revolutionary decade of the '60's. Hallucinogens are powerful substances. Only have tripped four times but those four trips will never be forgotten. RIP Hoffman, you lived a veeeerrrry long life. Here is a good New York Times article on him. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/07/international/europe/07hoffman.html?_r=2&pagewanted=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

And by the way, to the young people on this website, the link at the bottom to www.erowid.org is a great site to get the FACTS about substances you are considering taking for the first time. Be smart.

Dear Albert, RIP. Many of us have benefitted from your beautiful discovery, and yet many more should. I know I personally see and experience everything differently because of it, and in a much more beautiful and embracing way. If any of you are in Netflix, there's a documentary w/ Albert called Hoffman's Potion worth checking out.

an inspiration and the father of a great catalyst and tool for us humans to use. the work this man did not only with LSD, but isolating compounds and chemicals in natural mystic drugs to find the source of their effects and then synthesizing those chemical was all ground breaking. Read Storming Heaven:LSD and the American Dream by Jay Stevens if any of these things interest you.
